Description.
We are seeking a talented and highly motivated research fellow to undertake a multidisciplinary research project that integrates Neuroscience, Neuroimaging, and Big Data analysis.
The project, titled “Optical Imaging as a Diagnostic Tool for Monitoring Brain Function in X-Linked Rare Disorders.
From Preclinical Models to Patients,” is funded by the European Joint Programme on Rare Diseases.
Our goal is to identify a novel biomarker of brain function for Fragile X Syndrome (FXS) and Creatine Transporter Deficiency (CTD), the two most common causes of X-linked intellectual disability.
Specifically, we will determine if visually-evoked fNIRS signals can distinguish between patients and healthy controls, correlating with clinical outcomes.
This project aims to establish optical imaging as a new analytical tool to facilitate diagnostic monitoring and predict responses to potential therapeutic strategies for FXS and CTD.
Given that fNIRS is non-invasive and user-friendly, our ultimate goal is to enhance the therapeutic development pipeline for neurodevelopmental disorders, demonstrating the importance of implementing hemodynamic measures in clinical trials.
We are seeking a junior research fellow with experience in at least some of the following activities/topics.
Conducting clinical studies involving cohorts of patients with neurodevelopmental disorders; Utilizing functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) or other imaging techniques; Performing EEG recordings; Conducting neuropsychological assessments.
Experience with Matlab and Python programming is also beneficial.
The ideal candidate will demonstrate a positive attitude, independence, strong organizational and planning skills, networking abilities, team-building skills, a capacity for fast learning, and a passion for and commitment to the research.
Education.
Master degree in Medicine, Psychology or similar topics; PhD in Neuroscience, or similar topics OR medical residency in Child Neurology, Psychiatry, Neurology or similar topics OR 2-3 years of experience in research (in the above sectors).
Position= 1 year, renewable.
The period of employment is 1 year but can be extended up to 2 years, depending on the achieved results/performance.
The expected starting date of this position is July-September .
The project will be conducted at the IRCCS Stella Mars Foundation in Calambrone (Pisa, Italy).
