Role Purpose.
The Business Development Lead for the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) will play a pivotal role in originating, developing, and closing renewable energy projects.
This includes leading the entire development lifecycle, from project origination to financial modeling, commercial structuring, legal negotiations, government and donor engagement, and project closures.
Additionally, the role will provide support to implementation and asset management teams during project execution.
Key Responsibilities.
Identify and originate renewable energy projects for development.
Assess project feasibility, risks, and financial viability in collaboration with internal and external stakeholders.
Conduct detailed analyses of new business opportunities, including financial modeling, legal structuring, and optimizing project returns.
Oversee project development activities, such as permitting, land acquisition, and interconnection, ensuring alignment with approval processes and documentation.
Coordinate with internal teams (BD, engineering, HSES, legal, and finance) for successful project execution.
Build and nurture relationships with government agencies, regulatory bodies, and local communities.
Negotiate partnerships, acquisitions, and joint ventures.
Maintain and update the project pipeline database, providing regular progress reports on key metrics.
Travel frequently to support business development activities.
Qualifications.
5+ years of professional experience in the DRC, with a preference for expertise in business development, the power sector, or similar fields.
A motivated and collaborative self-starter with a strong work ethic and resilience.
Proven ability to build relationships with key stakeholders, including governments, utilities, donors, and private partners, with a clear understanding of complex sales processes.
Technical knowledge of solar PV and battery systems.
Strong skills in fundraising, project finance, and legal structuring, including proficiency in financial modeling and creating pitch materials.
Experience in project management, including scheduling, cost control, and procurement.
Proficiency with tools like HOMER, PVsyst, or similar modeling software, and strong MS Office skills.
Passion for transforming the power sector in Africa and advancing access to clean, reliable, and affordable energy.
Fluency in French and English, with excellent written and verbal communication skills.
