PHD CANDIDATE IN THE FIELD OF BIOLOGICAL ANTHROPOLOGY (PHYSICAL ANTHROPOLOGY AND PALEOPATHOLOGY)

Institute for Mummy Studies Short description of the position.
We are seeking a PhD candidate interested in biological anthropology, particularly in physical anthropology and paleopathology, focusing on skeletal and mummified human remains.
The project will involve the use of software for CT scan analysis to investigate pre-Columbian mummies housed at the MUNARQ Museum in La Paz, Bolivia.
Our Institute is internationally recognized for its research on biological remains, particularly mummified and skeletal human remains, from various periods and locations worldwide.
The position is part of a three-year PhD project aimed at reconstructing the biological (e.
., sex and age at death estimations) and paleopathological profiles of pre-Columbian individuals from Bolivia, based on CT scans conducted as part of the Bolivian Mummy Project (MUMBO).
A more specific focus of the paleopathological study will be on human skulls exhibiting artificial cranial deformations and signs of trepanation.
Additionally, the research will explore techniques used in body preparation (e.
., body fillings with various materials) prior to burial, representing the first attempt to provide a comprehensive analysis of burial practices in ancient Bolivia.
Tasks.
Conduct original research in biological anthropology through the study of CT scans.
Collaborate in a multi- and interdisciplinary research environment.
Publish research in international journals and present results at scientific national and international conferences.
Requirements.
University (Master or equivalent) degree in one of the following fields.
physical anthropology, archaeology, cultural heritage conservation, natural sciences, biology, and/or medicine.
Documented experience in the study of human remains, through laboratory activities and/or excavations, preferably with knowledge of CT image viewer software (e.
., Horos, RadiAnt DICOM Viewer) and segmentation techniques.
Strong background in biological anthropology (e.
., sex and age at death estimation, anthropometry) and solid knowledge of paleopathology.
Curiosity, availability, and a strong willingness to work collaboratively in a team, as well as independently, are highly valued.
Advanced proficiency in English, particularly in writing, is required.
Additionally, the ability to read Spanish will be advantageous.
Prior experience in writing articles for peer-reviewed scientific journals will be considered a strong advantage.
