INTERNSHIP IN POPULATION MONITORING OF BATS AND AUTOMATIC ACOUSTIC SAMPLING VIA BAT DETECTORS IN SOUTH TYROL

Within the Institute for Alpine Environment, we are looking for two ambitious and motivated interns to work as bat ecologist and field assistant for the Biodiversity Monitoring South Tyrol project and the SpeciesMonitoring project.
The Institute for Alpine Environment performs problem-oriented research of mountain environments in the fields of landscape ecology, global change, biodiversity, ecosystem services and sustainable development.
The ideal candidate has experience in field activities in remote areas, bat monitoring via bat detectors, analyses of bioacoustic datasets or monitoring of bat colonies in Europe and abroad.
We offer two internship contracts starting from April based at the headquarters of Eurac Research in Bolzano/Bozen with a duration of minimum 5 months (starting date is flexible).
Tasks.
Assistance with bat-logger installation for the season within the standard biodiversity monitoring program.
Provide support for bat data management, species identification, and datasheet preparation.
Conduct literature reviews on specific topics and methodologies.
Assist with field activities for bat surveys and monitoring, including mist-netting, emergence surveys, tree-roost monitoring with tree climbers, citizen science projects, and guano collection.
Collaborate in dormouse monitoring activities, such as nest box inspections and vegetation data collection.
Requirements.
Bachelor/Master's degree in Biology or Environmental Sciences.
We offer to access a big set of data to work on a MSc thesis within the framework of the project.
Eligibility for the internship requires either being a current student or having earned a bachelor's or master's degree within one year before the start of the contract.
Willingness and availability to work in alpine areas and to conduct field activities in alpine terrain, sporadically during evening or night.
Efficient organization skills.
Good interpersonal and collaborative skills to integrate in a working group and to interact with associated researchers from various institutions and with stakeholders.
Good knowledge of mammals and the European bat species, skills on bat bioacoustics and other bat survey techniques are advantageous.
Good English skills, additional skills in Italian or German are advantageous.
Experience in citizen science project is advantageous.
