INTERN FOR ENTOMOLOGICAL SURVEY IN BIODIVERSITY MONITORING PROJECTS IN SOUTH TYROL

Institute for Alpine Environment The Institute for Alpine Environment performs problem-oriented research of mountain environments in the fields of landscape ecology, global change, biodiversity, ecosystem services and sustainable development.
For the project "Biodiversity Monitoring South Tyrol" (BMS) and related other biodiversity projects we invite applications for the position of intern in the field of entomology.
Besides profound knowledge of the inner-Alpine insect fauna, the ideal candidate has gained experience in biodiversity surveys.
The investigation area will be the whole region of South Tyrol (ITA), the working location is Bolzano/Bozen.
BMS is an ongoing survey of biodiversity that serves as basic research but is also intended to provide a scientific base for political decisions concerning spatial planning, agriculture, and nature conservation.
BMS surveys animal and plant groups that react sensitively to climate and/or land-use changes, at habitat and landscape levels.
These surveys occur in 320 terrestrial and 120 aquatic sites spanning from lowland to alpine sites and distributed over the entire province of South Tyrol ( km²), including a large share of the diversity of habitats in the region.

The selected candidate will also be involved in other biodiversity projects running at the institute.
Tasks.
Support in butterfly and grasshopper surveys for the season within the monitoring standard program and within special projects of the Biodiversity Monitoring Support in the monitoring of protected invertebrate species (mainly Lepidoptera and Coleoptera) Support in digitalization and management of field data.
Support of field work for other taxonomical groups, e.
., mounting bat detectors, installing pitfall traps, collecting soil samples and supporting colleagues on the survey of other taxa.
Supporting with lab work, e.
., sample processing and storage and presorting of invertebrate samples.
Requirements.
Bachelor/master's degree in biology or Environmental Sciences (or similar; degree obtained not more than one year ago).
Willingness and availability to work outdoors also in alpine areas.
Good faunistic knowledge and identification skills for insect groups (butterflies and grasshoppers).
Experiences in biodiversity monitoring programs is advantageous.
Experiences with saproxylic beetles advantageous.
Good English skills, additional skills in German and Italian are advantageous.
Good interpersonal and collaborative skills to integrate in a working group.
