In particular, the Digital Society center conducts pioneering research focused on two crucial areas where ICT can have a profound impact on contemporary society.
Digital Twins for Human Society to better understand, predict, and proactively address the multifaceted challenges facing them; and New Media and Education for a Resilient Society - exploring the dynamics of new media and developing advanced digital solutions towards a more inclusive, sustainable and resilient society.
The center is composed by a multidisciplinary team of approximately 75 researchers, technologists and managers (including PhD students) organized in 7 research units dedicated to specific research areas in the ICT domain and 2 support units focusing on project management and technology maturation.
The Remote Sensing for Digital Earth (RSDE) Research Unit focuses on research in the remote sensing field with specific attention to.
the use of remote sensing, image/signal processing, pattern recognition.
artificial intelligence, machine/deep learning technologies, in several application domains for supporting a digital monitoring, analysis and sustainable management of the Earth; the development of efficient services with high impact; the definition of integrated systems for an effective and low-cost management of environment, natural resources and anthropic activities.
RSDE has specific domain knowledge in managing multitemporal information in Satellite Image Time Series (SITS).

Job Description The purpose of FBK’s Tenure Track program is to offer high level professionals the opportunity of pursuing a structured career path in order to become a tenured researcher contributing to the long- term strategy of the organization.
Within this framework, FBK is looking for a candidate to cover the position with a dynamic, highly motivated, researcher in the field of Remote Sensing with a focus on the topic of analysis and processing of satellite image time series.
The candidate will work within the Remote Sensing for Digital Earth (RSDE) Reserach Unit, reporting directly to the Head of Unit.
The candidate will be involved in research work related to the design of advanced system for information extraction from satellite image time series, including change detection, land-cover/use change analysis, trend analysis, etc.
The candidate is expected to.
Conduct research and innovative activities in the broad area of Remote Sensing with a focus on analysis and processing of satellite image time series.
Design methodologies for information extraction from satellite image time series of passive and active sensor systems, applications, and integration into processing platform.
Participate in research and innovation projects, including both research and industrial collaborations with national and international bodies, national/international space agencies, researchers of RSDE and other units in FBK.
Contribute to proposals for funded activities, including reporting and dissemination/communication of results.
Contribute to research, with a good degree of autonomy, proposing innovative topics at the group level.
Supervise the internship and thesis of bachelor and master students.
The Ideal Candidate should have.
PHD in areas related to in Computer Science, Mathematics, or related fields; Expertise in remote sensing, image processing, information extraction; Excellent publication track record in the field of image processing and analysis of satellite image time series; Research experience in the following topics.
Mathematical models and techniques for image processing; Satellite image time series analysis and information extraction; Methodologies and tools for change detection and damage assessment; Experience in working for international research projects on image processing and analysis of satellite image time series; Intellectual autonomy, collaborative attitude, strong commitment to achieving assigned objectives, and applying research results in real-world applications; Oral and written proficiency in English; Excellent communication skills and teamwork attitude; Good communication and relational skills.
Additional Requirements Previous experience and/or certified qualification with Matlab, Python, Javascript, Java, knowledge of Unix protocols and server-based programming, familiarity with web data storage architectures (AWS, Azure, GCP, etc.).
Knowledge and previous experience in Earth Observation data formats (Sentinel, Landsat, etc.
satellites), downloading services (CDSE, EOSDIS, etc.) and related APIs.
Knowledge of efficient implementation on CPU and GPU with linear-algebra optimized algorithms, skills in the secure design and implementation for flexible integration of algorithms into existing platforms.

Tenure Track position leading to an FBK 3nd Level Researcher (R3) permanent contract.
Duration.
The maximum duration of the Tenure Track contract is up to 5 years (which may be reduced in accordance with the Committee assessment on the candidate's abilities and skills).
If the final assessment of the Tenure Track experience is positive, the selected candidate for the tenure track position will be offered a permanent R3 contract.
