The position available is in the Custom Radiation Sensors (CRS) unit of FBK-SD.
The CRS Research Unit carries out R&D activities on advanced radiation and image sensors fabricated with full custom technologies.
The main research activities of the group are on the design, development and characterization of silicon and silicon-carbide radiation detectors, single-photon sensors and advanced image sensors for scientific experiments in high energy and astrophysics, medical diagnostics, spectroscopy.
The current position is mainly dedicated to LGADs sensors.

Job description FBK-SD is looking for a dynamic, highly motivated, independent researcher in the field of silicon and silicon-carbide radiation sensors, for the development of cutting-edge photo-detector and radiation detector technologies and devices that will be used to build next-generation systems in large scientific experiments and industrial applications, such as high energy physics experiments, payloads for space missions, advanced spectroscopies, material analysis, medical imaging.
The research activity will focus on the research and development of Low-Gain Avalanche Diodes (LGADs).
However, activities might extend to different types of silicon detectors that are currently under development at FBK in the CRS research unit and fabricated using either a fully customized fabrication technology, employing the internal clean-room, or external silicon foundries.
These detectors types range from the next generation of low-level light sensors, such as single photon avalanche diodes (SPADs) and Silicon Photomultipliers (SiPMs), ionizing radiation detectors, such as Silicon Drift Detectors (SDDs), pixel and microstrip detectors, 3D/active edge sensors.
The research activities could involve different aspects of the full R&D cycle.
designing new technological solutions and understanding/improving device properties through TCAD simulations; designing sensor layouts and characterizing sensors; microfabricating the sensors in the FBK internal cleanroom, including fabricating new prototypes and producing sensors for scientific experiments or industrial applications.
The focus of the activities could vary based on the candidates' abilities and the specific needs of the unit.
The work will be performed in close collaboration with other device and process scientists and engineers.
The selected candidate will become a key part of the team working on ongoing projects and future developments, actively participating to the dissemination and networking activities.
In addition to the above mentioned activities the successful candidate is expected to.
conduct innovative research on silicon-based radiation sensors with focus on LGADs; interact with internal and external collaboration partners to understand the requirements on the devices to be developed; contribute to the CRS unit’s dissemination activities; contribute to the CRS unit’s networking activities; contribute to the CRS unit’s self-funding, through the writing of project proposals or starting/managing collaborations with industry; interact daily with the research team to interpret the operative needs and requirements; report regularly on projects/activities status; cooperate and communicate effectively with the Unit’s Head and other project members, providing assistance and technical support; review research deliverables and initiate appropriate corrective actions.
The ideal candidate shall have a physics or electronic engineering background with a background in the field of semiconductor detectors, their development and application.
Strong attitude to team-working and good collaboration skills are also a requirement.
Experience on TCAD simulation and design of silicon devices as well as direct experience in silicon microfabrication processing are preferred.
Although candidates with experience in all detection technologies will be evaluated, direct experience in the design, microfabrication, testing of LGAD detectors will be preferred.
Job requirements The ideal candidate should have.
Master Degree in Electronics Engineering, Physics, Material Science or related fields; Strong attitude to research activity and innovation; Strong teamwork attitude; Excellent knowledge of English (oral and written); Enthusiastic attitude to research activity.
